Bio

An award-winning director and choreographer, LARRY SOUSA’s work has been featured at theatres from coast to coast, including Pasadena Playhouse, Goodspeed Musicals, The Joyce Theatre in NYC, The Garry Marshall Theatre in Los Angeles, Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre, The New York Fringe Festival, Musical Theatre West, North Coast Rep., Wyoming Theatre Festival, Utah Musical Theatre, SpeakEasy Stage, Lyric Stage, The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus, Wheelock Family Theatre, Boston Children’s Theatre, Gloucester Stage, Reagle Music Theatre, and many more.  For Toronto-based entertainment company CREATIVIVA, Larry directed two original musicals which perform seasonally in Turks and Caicos.  His work also appears in commercials and films.

 

2024 marks Larry's fifth year as the Director and Choreographer of Harvard University's legendary

HASTY PUDDING SHOW.    One of the oldest theatre companies in the world, Hasty Pudding Theatricals produces an all-new, full-scale original musical comedy every year, with performances in Boston, New York City, and Bermuda.  This year's show, HEIST HEIST BABY, is the company's 175th annual production.

Larry is a recipient of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, the L.A. Ovation Award, two Backstage Garland Awards, the OnStage Critics Award, and multiple IRNE Awards, to name a few.  He is an NAACP Theatre Award, Los Angeles Weekly Theatre Award, and Elliot Norton Award nominee, and a two- time winner of the American Dance Awards Choreographer of the Year prize.

 

Larry is an Asst. Professor of Theatre at the prestigious Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where he frequently directs and choreographs musicals.  His recent productions there include the Boston premiere of HEAD OVER HEELS, Sondheim's THE FROGS, ANOTHER ROLL OF THE DICE (developmental workshop), Leonard Bernstein’s MASS (co-direction with Neil Donohoe), SHREK (choreography), and DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS (choreography).  He is a frequent guest artist at many colleges including Emerson, Boston University, Boston College, Bridgewater State University, and more.

Larry has been awarded the prestigious Rev. J. Donald Monan S.J. Guest Professorship in Theatre Arts at Boston College for 2023-2024. The Monan Residency is an endowed professorship that brings nationally and internationally renowned theatre artists to Boston College to create theatre and teach. Previous Monan awardees include Broadway Producer Nick Scandalios, Tony-Award nominee Bryce Pinkham, and acclaimed Broadway Musical Director Mary-Mitchell Campbell. 

 

Larry also teaches periodically at Emerson College, University of Southern California, Berklee, Bridgewater State University, and he is an alumnus and longtime faculty member of The Gold School/Project Moves Dance Company.  He is a sought-after master class teacher at countless performing arts programs across the USA and Canada. He is a frequent contributor to DANCE STUDIO LIFE magazine, and served as a "Special Awards" judge at respected performing arts competitions for over 20 years.

 

Before pursuing directing and choreography full-time, Larry was a featured performer in several musicals on Broadway, notably the original company of THE GOODBYE GIRL starring Bernadette Peters and Martin Short, and the 1994 Broadway revival of SHE LOVES ME directed by Scott Ellis with choreography by Academy Award-winner Rob Marshall.  Larry also appeared as a featured actor in numerous TV sitcoms, films, commercials.  

 

He holds a BFA in theatre from Ithaca College, and pursued a unique interdisciplinary MFA in theatre at the University of California at Irvine.
